Review of Freak of the Week by Krept and Konan ft Jeremih
Krept & Konan exploded on to the scene again recently with their track Certified featuring Rick Ross (see our review of Certified here). We all thought this was a sign of things to come, strong dirty Hip Hop lyrics and hard rapping, all laced with an inimitable UK style. Krept & Konan were recently joking on 1Xtra that this was to put people off the scent of their new album.
The debut album Long Way Home is yet to be released but their second track Freak of the Week is a real banger as well. Featuring man of the moment in the shape of US RnB sensation Jeremih providing that memorable hook this feels like a complete track that is comfortable for Hip Hop heads as well as tailor made for radio play, without selling out.
The track is all about the boys eulogising a particular girl and what she stands for, at points calling out “bad girl Ri Ri” who we assume is the one and only Rihanna. The track tells the story of how this girl knows what she wants and knows how to get it. The beats are strong, the duos lyrics mix amazingly well with the soulful tones of Jeremih and the whole thing just balances out to make a true hit.
Big things are to come from this duo. Freak of the Week feels like it is destined to become a summer anthem and on top of that, the boys have just signed their first deal with a major in the shape of Sony.
When an underground act move from its roots to a commercial base, there is always a risk of them losing who they are. Whilst signing with the major and adopting a US influence does show change for Krept and Konan, there is still a real and credible feel to the tracks. The US influence is further cemented on their forthcoming album with many major collaborations including Wiz Khalifa, however the strength of the tracks so far, show Krept and Konan are ready to explode both here and stateside.
