Interview with Tommy B
Name: Tommy B
Genre of music: Hip Hop/Rap
Twitter name: @TommySBJr
Where do you live?
I live in 2 different states. I was born in Los Angeles, California and do most all of my recording at the Muzik Mafia Den which is located in Chatsworth, California about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. Then I come to a home in Las Vegas where I was raised from 1 year old.
Many of our readers are UK based and as such may not be aware of you or your music. How would you describe your sound?
As far as my sound I would say it is unique from a standpoint of jazz, hip hop and pop combined.
Tell us about your latest release
My latest release is called Nevadafornia, which is the title cut of the CD. It has an old school feel with the brand new sounds that are happening today, It is a classic in my opinion, you should check it out. My video is on youtube/mrtommybreal.
What was your motivation for this latest release?
My motivation comes from the way I live my life, I am a self motivated person who will not settle for anything but the top of whatever I pursue, but I stay humble no matter what I achieve because I don’t compete against anybody but myself, that’s a waste of time to me.
What influences are there that helped shape your sound?
As far as the factors that shape my sound, I listen to all kinds of music and then I come up with a combination that works for me. I like to work with a producer that is open minded and is willing to go outside the box. There really isn’t one particular artist that has a major influence on me.
What is the music scene like in your home town?
There is so much talent out there it is hard to have a favorite, it depends what kind of a mood I’m in at the time. Need I say that Los Angeles is where most every major music event in the business is held here, as well as the weather is the best to get around and network. Some of the best recording studios in the world are here and the club life is bang’n off the charts. Everybody that is anybody in the entertainment business owns a home here, you’ve got the beaches, the desert and the mountains all within a short distance and great locations to shoot videos. This is where you need to be if you want a real chance to come up.
How did you get started in music?
I got started by hang’n out with my younger brother who was putt’n in some work with some locally well known artists, he new quite a few people in the hip hop world around the L.A. area. I had a natural feel for it and liked what I was seeing so I challenged myself and here I am after 2 years grinding everyday in the Lab, writing and practicing my pocket presence with different cadences and multiple styles I have developed.
What hints and tips would you offer to anybody trying to get in to music?
Asking me to give people advice or tips about getting into the music business is kind of a sensitive question for me, but I’ll give you my opinion. First if you don’t love it don’t do it. Second never be satisfied with what you did last, I mean don’t look back or it will stunt your growth, and if your in the hip hop part of music for any other reason than to feed your family get an 8 to 5 and do your music as a hobby.
If you weren’t in music, what do you think you would be doing and why?
If I wasn’t trying to make a living in music, I probably would be somewhere in the tech industry. I do a lot of things with my computer, I’m not a computer geek per say, but I am a game wizard and could get into the development of games and so on.
If you could collaborate with any body, who would it be and why?
On collaboration with another artist, there are a lot of interesting artists I would like to work with at some time in my career, but since you want to know a strong choice would be my boy Drizzy (Drake), he writes dynamic songs with a lot of appeal to the mass of people. Since you asked me that question I’m not familiar with any UK hip hop artists that have a large following over there, if you could put me in contact with a beast I’d love it, I want badly to tour overseas, but I need to get paying gigs to do so. I am a very confident person and I know if I did get on with a popular UK artist I would put it down where the people would feel me.
Just how big can you be?
On how big I could be. My answer to that is I have never thought small in my life, my father always told me think small and you stay small, think big and you’ll be big. I never put limits on myself.
In terms of your music, what does success look like?
As far as my success looks like. The only thing that will stop me from getting to the top is death. I got thick skin I don’t let negative people affect me, in fact they motivate me. When somebody tells me I can’t do something it drives me more, again my father said quote”why not you”. As I said earlier in the interview, I would love to tour and build a fan base, I am an easy person to get along with, I love all races, creeds, and colors, nationalities, and love making friends anywhere I go.
Do you have any plans to visit the UK?
I would very much like to network with the UK and the rest of Europe. I know you will enjoy my live show and my music, I feed on love, fun and positive things, so help me with some real plugs and you’ve got a positive situation coming over there.
What message would you like to leave for the readers of Music Eyz and everybody in the UK?
The message I want to leave from this interview is that I love people and it would be a privilege to be able to go overseas and meet people and perform my music, thanks from the bottom of my heart for this interview and no matter what, I will sometime be coming over to build a strong relationship with the people of the UK and the rest of Europe.
