Review of London Grammar Gig at Cardiff Solus
Kicking off their UK tour in Cardiff, London Grammar showed why they’ve become one of the brightest sounds to surface in the past 12 months. After only a short period of time, they’ve become synonymous with ambient, ethereal and classical sounds.
If you wanted a gig full of energy and anthems, this isn’t going to be the place for you, but if you have a love for the unique voice of Hannah Reid and her powerful vocal, you need London Grammar in your life. I’ve seen them described as a “hip hop trio”, but that’s as far removed from the reality as you could possibly get. To my ears there’s a little bit of the Cranberries and The XX, which considering the success both mentioned have had, it’s not a bad comparison.
With a set that lasted just over an hour and featured all their current material from their number two album “If you wait”, it proved to be a chilled out gig as expected with some stand out moments of Nightcall, Wasting my young years, and their biggest single to date, Strong.
2014 will be a massive year for Hannah, Dan and Dominic, and it’ll be interesting to watch how they develop as a band. What next? Only time will tell, but if this current album and tour is anything to go by, London Grammar will continue to dominate.
