Music Eyz Hotlist 2014 – Ones to Watch
We do this every year, an article when we get the various minds and complex brains together at Music Eyz to bring you a list of the up and coming artists to watch out for in the coming year. Well 2014 is no different. Below are some of the names we expect to make an impact on the music scene in 2014. This doesn’t mean they will sell millions of records or become world dominators like One Direction, but they will be big.
Now obviously we can’t be right all the time, so if you think there is somebody else we should watch out for, let us know.
Anyway, so in no particular order, here is the 2014 Music Eyz Hotlist
1. Ella Eyre
We have been really positive about Ella Eyre in recent reviews. Whilst she may not be a household name as yet, you will have heard her voice. Her powerful, soul vocals have featured on collaborations with Rudimental and more recently with Tinie Tempah. This girl has serious talent. Her EP was recently released, so get hold of a copy and see what we mean.
2. Neon Jungle
Neon Jungle are a girl group with a difference. Yes the quartet have been styled well to appeal to a wide audience. However that is where similarities where the likes of The Saturdays ends. The girls all possess good voices, however the music is much more edgy, with a real dance edge. They are all a group with real attitude as opposed to manufactured attitude, in fact at one point Braveheart, their track that is scheduled for a 19th January release, gets intercepted by genuinely credible spitting of rap lyrics. For their pure diversity, we reckon Neon Jungle could be one to watch.
Now ShaoDow isn’t exactly a newbie to the music scene. He has been pretty successful to date with his ability to push tracks on his own, the good old fashioned way of putting himself out there and selling his material himself. His unique ability to mix his learnings from martial arts with genuine underground Hip Hop is first class. His recent material is big and he is genuinely raising his game with every new release. Keep an eye out for ShaoDow.
4. Rosie Lowe
This is a name you may not know. To be honest, she hasn’t hit many critics hotlists either. Rosie Lowe is a singer songwriter from London. She doesn’t produce music for a commercial audience, it is music with heart and passion. The minimalistic backing tracks provide atmosphere and a general moody ambience. Rosie has a lovely vocal ability, she sings really clearly with a great style, never once trying to belt one out that an X Factor diva. Standout tracks from Rosie include 10k Balloons, that can be found on Rosie Lowe‘s soundcloud.
5. Sam Smith
OK, so this one might be a bit of a cheat. Everybody knows Sam Smith after appearing on Naughty Boy’s La La La and Disclosure‘s Latch. He also probably appears on everybody’s One To Watch List. So if you can’t beat em, join em. It is a little more than that though, Sam does have a great aura about him. He also has a great vocal range and can often being heard using that range including an alleged falsetto ability. Don’t just take our word for it Sam Smith is BRITs Critics Choice winner 2014 and also BBC Sound of 2014 nominee.
6. Misty Miller
19 year old Misty Miller is not even in the same league as far as public attention, critics plaudits or label backing. However, what Misty lacks in big-time support she makes up for in talent. Misty Miller sings with real emotion and in tracks such as her recent demo Petrified, you feel she may break down and end the track. Her music is from the heart and she deserves to make an impact in 2014.
Banks is another nominee for BBC Sound of 2014. Banks aka Jillian Banks fuses a dark RnB flavour with an electronic sound, result, a genuinely unique sound. Much was the impact of her EP, Banks has gained support and collaborated with the likes of Totally Extinct Dinosaurs. According to her PR, she is putting the finishing touches to her debut album, one we here at Music Eyz is sure to make an impact.
Mapei is a soul singer from Sweden. She has an incredibly powerful, throaty and soulful voice. She has a real old style to her voice. That is not an insult. Think of some of the great soul singers of the past, she has that kind of tone and feel to her. She first came to prominence last year with Don’t Wait, however on Mapei‘s Soundcloud at the moment, you can hear an acoustic version, which is frankly nothing short of brilliant. Mapei is scheduled to release her album early 2014, we think she could make it big.
9. Jeremy Messersmith
Jeremy Messersmith is not new to music. However, despite having four albums already to his name, he has made very little impact anywhere outside his home town of Minneapolis. One thing is now in his favour. Jeremy has now signed to Glassnote records who play home to acts such as Childish Gambino and Mumford & Sons. Messersmith has a great voice, which he uses to great effect over his pop/folk music. We think that 2014 could be the breakthrough year for Jeremy Messersmith.
10. Chance The Rapper
Chance The Rapper started to make some waves in 2013. Chance The Rapper owned Lil Wayne on his latest release Dedication 5, with the Chicago teenager showing a lyrical capability well beyond his years. We are not naïve enough to think this wasn’t all planned. After all, Chance The Rapper had already received huge plaudits following his debut EP Acid Rap still free to download. This has also won him spots on the tours for the likes of Eminem and Macklemore.
So let us know what you think of our list. Do you think we should have added anybody else? Well just let us know. Happy listening in 2014.
