Ellie Goulding at Cardiff University (Gig Review)

Ellie Goulding Gig at Cardiff University (Review)

For someone who’s shy, she certainly is a paradox of a singer but in Cardiff last night, Ellie Goulding rocked out big time. From the start of Figure 8 to the climax of Burn, through her other hits of Anything can happen, Starry Eyed, and the Calvin Harris’ collaboration I Need Your Love, there were no fillers just killers.

Having seen her previously at Wembley this summer, when I thought it was just too big for her, I was looking forward to seeing her close up and the Great Hall at Cardiff Uni was a near perfect venue for that. Only slight problem during the first half of her set was the levels which were ironed out later on. Maybe that’s just because her voice is better suited to some venues rather than others – also doesn’t help when people around were quite loud & not really paying attention during the quieter section – rant over!

You often wonder when a singer will start headlining bigger venues, she has arena gigs next year, but for me, there’s nothing more pleasing to the ear (or eye for that) than having Ellie Goulding fairly close up. Having a running theme like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, or Kylie suits them quite well and works in an arena setting. Whether the transition for Ellie works in a similar way is another thing, although I’ll want to be the first to want to see her, there’s no doubt about that.

Other highlights from the night include her with just a guitar for Guns & Horses, and a crowd pleasing choral moment of Your Song. If you get the chance to see her before she starts headlining arenas, take it. You won’t regret it.
