Autism Community Hits Back At Drake and J Cole
You can’t help but have noticed if you follow us on Twitter that we are helping with an event coming up in September. The event is a fashion show organised by Anna Kennedy OBE, to recognise and reward people that are touched by Autism in the form of a makeover. We helped to judge the entrants with Gail Porter, Adele Silva and Maggie Paterson (from Pineapple Performing Arts) to create a shortlist. Joe Swash will be joining on the evening to present a category.
Don’t worry this isn’t some article for us to pat ourselves on the back, there is a point to it. As we all know, Hip Hop has never shied away from controversy, normally about guns, ho’s and killing etc, however a recent track by huge rappers J Cole and Drake have taken a swipe at people at people suffering from autism. The lyric in question “I’m artistic, you n****s is autistic, retarded”.
Anna Kennedy OBE in conjunction with the Anti Bullying Alliance, has since set-up a petition to attempt to get the lyrics in the track changed. The petition set-up on 13 July specifically targets the track ‘Jodeci Freestyle‘ released tomorrow. Whilst the petition may not get the track changed on a global scale, we can hope that the duo and their record company take note and at the very least change the offending line for their radio edits. This would mean the major commercial stations such as Radio 1 wouldn’t broadcast the lyrics.
The petition has just under 3,700 signatures at the time of writing this, 1,300 short of its target. If you would like to help make a stand on this, you can find the Petition against ‘Jodeci Freestyle’ here.
