RIP – Jeff Hanneman
Tragic news to report I’m afraid. Jeff Hanneman, axeman, songwriter and founding member of the American thrash quartet Slayer passed away due to liver failure on the 2nd May age 49.
Jeff contracted a flesh-eating disease, necrotizing fasciitis in early 2011 which put him out of action until his alleged recovery in 2012. It is unknown if the liver failure was a complication related to the disease.
I must admit, despite my love of thrash I have never really warmed to Slayer’s music but their live performances and contributions to the heavy metal scene over the last 30 years cannot be argued with. I have seen Slayer three times, twice with Jeff and once without (he could not attend Sonisphere 2011 due to the illness) and say what you want about them as a band it doesn’t change the fact that Jeff was a brilliant performer and a bloody good guitarist.
Rest in peace Jeff!
