Review of Closer by Lulu James
So before I got sent the link to ‘Closer’, I had never heard of Lulu James. But that is what I love about this job, hearing new people and expanding my musical horizons. My first thought and one I was scared of that Lulu James may be a more modern version of the horrific singer of yesteryear, Lulu. Thankfully on first view of the video and on hearing her vocal you know that couldn’t be further from the truth. She does carry one thing from the old Lulu and that’s a loud powerful voice.
So moving on to what we do get. Lulu James shows in the video for ‘Closer‘ she does have a bit of the diva about her. Now I mean that in a positive way. The way she delivers her vocal on this synthed dance track needs attitude and she delivers that in a positive and sassy way. The late 80s early 90s style synths are real good and Lulu James even has a late 90s dance type vocal over it. This retro dance seems to be the way forward for mainstream success at the moment, have you heard A.M.E. latest one?
However, to term ‘Closer’ and Lulu James a dance act would be unfair. If you think of somebody in the mould of Jessie Ware, a kind of pumped up electronic RnB then you might be closer to where you could position her music. Don’t get me wrong, Jessie is talented, but on this showing Lulu James seems to have a bit of added spice to her.
The video for ‘Closer’ is a stark affair. Presenting striking images of Lulu James on a vivid clear white background and clever use of typography. This is a very professionally shot video which adds to the less contemporary feel.
I know you probably read some of our reviews and think that you need consistency. After all in some we talk about over synthed or music that is too steeped in an electronic feel and then we praise this track. Well to be honest, that’s what makes music great, there are no right or wrong answers and every track or album we review is done on its individual merits.
Now Lulu James came as a bit of a surprise to me. But I love her track ‘Closer’ and can’t wait to hear more. Her voice is distinctive enough to offer stand-out and the stripped back music offers a quality listen.
