Review of Girlfriend by Misty Miller
‘Girlfriend’ is the catchy-as-f*ck new single from Misty Miller. She’s 18, she was signed at 15, but she’s got the stage presence of a – ooh, 23 year old…
The press release quotes the usual slightly cliched (if she were a bloke) inspirations of Iggy and the Velvets, but there are a load of contemporary influences there too. There’s a bit of the Vaccines in the brevity of the tune, a slightly shambolic rhythm section in a Libertines style, and just a little bit of Jack White too.
All that in 2:22 including fake feedback false start. Frankly, the video is as inspired as mutton (it’s a *real* working men’s club) but judging by this and her excellent session on tonight’s Steve Lamacq show she’s going to be worth watching.
I played it three times for the purposes of this review. Can’t expel it from my synapses. Think PJ Harvey goes pop and you’re not far off the mark.
