Review of What U Mean by Big K.R.I.T. ft Ludacris
So Big K.R.I.T. hails from southern USA, not always an area known for being particularly PC and this track strengthens that view. So if you are easily offended or don’t like things of a slightly less then pure nature do not view the video, do not listen to the track and maybe don’t read this review.
On ‘What U Mean’ taken from Big K.R.I.T.‘s debut album ‘Live From the Underground’ the Mississippi MC and producer gets support from Hip Hop heavyweight Ludacris. The track harps back to the days when things were a lot simpler for Hip Hop folk, largely about getting your thang on.
‘What U Mean’ is underpinned by a simple and repetitive but somewhat melodious chorus, one of those that will stick in your head. But again, if you should have switched off after the opening paragraph, shame on you for reading on. The chorus basically goes over “What U Mean, u aint nasty why the fuck u came”. This definitely isn’t a reference to somebody being a “not very nice person”.
Big K.R.I.T. demonstrates on the track why DefJam have invested in him. Yes it has a repetitive chorus, yes it is deliberately provocative and yes it is simple in its construct, but boy, does it work. The production on it is first class, the chorus is bloody catchy and the main man delivers some great lines. Soaked in an old school party feel to it the track works, the video even contains a lot of old images, check the car and sound equipment.
Ludacris jumps in (literally) with his customary delivery, using his raspy rhyming ability to take the track to a new level. Again, if you are of a sensitive nature, you wont like it.
For me, there is not much to say, this is Hip Hop in one of its simplest forms and for me a really good track that you can listen to over and over and over again. It is also the sort of track that can definitely fly in the clubs.
Nice one Big K.R.I.T. and Ludacris you have got the UK hooked.
