Adele Dominates the Grammys

Adele sweeps the board at the 2012 Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards took place last night against a sombre backdrop.  Whilst the stars and music industry big cheeses were there to celebrate what was a great time in music, it felt like they had lost one of their own.  The news of Whitney Houston’s death was still fresh in everyone’s mind, but as the old saying goes “The Show Must Go On”.

RIP Whitney Houston

British Acts have had a chequered history at the awards, with many whom we believe are stars failing to register with our American cousins.  Last night was a definite exception, with Tottenham girl and Music Eyz favourite Adele winning almost everything she possibly could.  Add to that an amazing live performance, her first since throat surgery, it turned out to be a dream for Adele.

Adele one every award she was nominated for including the three biggest, record, song and album of the year. Her final tally was six awards, one more than our own troubled soul, the late Amy Winehouse who won five back in 2009.  Her six wins also equals the record for a Brit, Eric Clapton also won six for his ‘Unplugged’ album and associated songs back in 1993.

Amy Winehouse also managed to get an award last night.  Her duet with Tony Bennett ‘Body and Soul’ was awarded best pop duo/group award.  The award seemed kind of fitting giving the back drop to proceedings.

Other winners included: Foo Fighters; Kanye West; Bon Iver; Corinne Bailey Rae and Paul McCartney.  In what was a successful night for British music, Paul McCartney closed proceedings with a little help from some Rock n Roll heavyweights including Dave Groh and The Boss himself, Bruce Srpingsteen.
