We were lucky enough to get some time with the quite amazing DJ talent that is Jaguar Skills. His skills are honed so tightly that he can rightly assume the persona of Ninja DJ, test him and you are likely to get five toes in your face. We asked him a series of questions from ‘Who has been the biggest influence on his career?’ through to “Does he actually know any martial arts?’ – Read the interview below, there are some unexpected answers.
Where you do you live At the HIDE OUT
What your clan look like One Son
Favourite tune at the moment?
PROBABLY SOME WEIRD THEME TUNE.
First off, where did you get your name, Jaguar Skills?
FROM MY MASTER.
Can you explain the Ninja influence on your site, blog and Twitter etc?
NINJAS LOOK COOL, RIGHT?
Your big break came when you were asked to take on a residency by Jade Jagger, how did that meeting come about? Are you still in touch?
Ibiza is where a huge number of DJs either make it or break it. What do you think helped you make it? And what tips would you give to up and coming DJs looking to break on to the scene?
JUST WORK REALLY HARD, MAN. AND MAKE SURE EACH SET IS BETTER THAN THE LAST. DON’T GET WAISTED. IT’S A JOB!
You are currently undergoing a massive tour all over the UK, what is the best bit about doing such a tour?
MEETING THE CROWD AND RAVING WITH THEM. THE TOUR WAS ABSOLUTELY KILLER!
You have already done a few dates, who has been the best crowd?
THE LONDON GIG REALLY STOOD OUT…BUT ONLY JUST. THEY WERE ALL SUPER WICKED.
So you are currently best known for the stuff you do for Trevor Nelson, how did that first get hooked up?
What is your relationship like with Trev?
WICKED. HE’S LIKE MY UNCLE.
You have also exploded on to the mainstream scene with the help of Moyles. Do you listen to Moyles?
I’M NEVER UP THAT EARLY!
How did you get the inspiration for your first mixtapes for Moyles featuring the TV themes?
FROM MY CHILDHOOD. I WAS A TV KID. TOO MUCH TV!
We get loads of people still talking about the TV themes, what is the most bizarre or abstract mixtape or mash-up you have done or would consider doing?
HUMMM? I DID THIS MIX TAPE CALLED “THE NAME THAT SAMPLE SHOW”….TRY AND FIND THAT ONE! IT’S CRAZY WEIRD!
Who is your hot tip out of the DJ prospects out there at the moment?
THERE’S A LOAD OF WARM UP DJ’S WHO I’VE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH. MODESTEP WERE REALLY GOOD ON MY TOUR.
When you play out, what is your banker for a floor filler?
THERE A REMIX I DID OF “HIGHER STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS” THAT ALWAYS SMASHES IT.
When you plan a mix, do you practice and structure pre-show or do you just go out with an idea and see how the crowd react?
I HAVE GROUPS OF RECORDS THAT WORK TOGETHER AND I LIKE TO MIX AROUND THE GROUPS WHEN I DJ.
There are a number of Hip Hop heads at MusicEyz one of our favourite DJs of all time is Funkmaster Flex. Are you a fan? What makes him stand out?
HE SHOUTS A LOT…HA!
What is most important to you? Fame, money or the music?
MUSIC & MONEY….NOT AT ALL INTERESTED IN THE FAME. REALLY.
Who would you say has been the biggest influence on your career to date?
There seems to be a few celebrities taking to the decks these days, with the likes of Bianca Gascoigne and ex page 3 girl Jakki Degg, what is your view on this influx?
WELL, THEY’RE NOT GONNA MAKE A CARRIER OF DJING. THEY’LL PROBABLY DO ONE OR TWO GIGS, AND GIVE IT UP. I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ANYONE DJING – BUT IT’S A BIT LIKE GIVING ME A TV SCRIPT AND EXPECTING ME TO LEARN IT AND THEN ACT IT WITH NO TRAINING AT ALL. THEY FAIL TO REALIZE THAT IT TAKES FUCKING AGES TO GET GOOD AT DJ….AS IT DOES ACTING.
Whats your view on the music on the current London club scene?
I HAVE NONE.
Where do you prefer to play, London or Ibiza?
Which DJ has the tightest skills at the moment?\
DJ TIGHT SKILLS.
What is your view on the rise of UK Hip Hop with the likes of Dizzee, Tinie and Tinchy representing?
IT’S GREAT, RIGHT?
Changing tact a little now.
Djing has become popularised and seemingly more simple with advanced technology. What is your view on technology influencing Djing?
IT’S A GREAT THING. IT GIVES THE ARTIST WAY MORE CREATIVITY. WHICH CAN ONLY BE GOOD.
How much of what you play out is still on old-fashioned vinyl compared to CDs and increasingly digital?
You are known for your amazing selection of samples? Where do you get them from and how do you pick them to mix together?
IT’S A CONTINUING MISSION. IF I HEAR SOMETHING I LIKE, I’M SAMPLING IT THERE AND THEN. I HAVE A HUGE COLLECTION OF SAMPLES.
DJs often get knocks when they start out, how do you overcome bad experiences?
YOU HAVE TO GET KNOCKS. IT ONLY MAKES YOU STRONGER. IT MAKES YOU BETTER. I’VE HAD A LOAD OF HATERS. BUT REALLY, THEY ONLY MAKE ME WANNA FIGHT HARDER.
A number of big acts now don’t leave home without their DJ. Are there any acts you would like to DJ with on tour?
If you could only use one genre of music from now on, what would it be and why?
JAZZ FUNK FUSION. WHAT’S BETTER THAN JAZZ-FUNK-FUSION? I KNOW, JAG-STEP. I’D BE INTO JAG-STEP.
Ninja? Do you know any martial arts, and if so what level are you?
I KNOW A BUNCH OF NINJITSU AND SOME TAI-CHI. I’M A WHITE BELT.
After this tour has finished what can we expect from Jaguar Skills?
LOADS OF STUFF MAN. IT’S HARD TO KEEP UP WITH MY OUTPUT. I HAVE AN ALBUM COMING OUT ON TOOLROOM RECORDS IN JULY. IT’S A COMPILATION ALBUM WITH A LOAD OF PRODUCTION TOO ON IT. IT’S A HOUSE MUSIC THING I’M WORKING ON. WITH A TOUCH OF DUB-STEP AND D&B AND A LITTLE HIP-HOP BEATS. BASICALLY, IT’S JAG-STEP.
Will we see you with your own show on BBC Radio?
HUMMM? I WONDER? I’D LOVE ONE.
If you could send one message out to our readers and your fans, what would it be?
WORK HARD. BE NICE. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS! OH, AND DON’T WEAR A MASK. HoooOOOO!!! xxx
